The answer to this question is yes. More and more people nowadays are becoming increasingly nervous as compared to the previous times, and why not? There are several factors that have led to this prognosis, one of them being the economy.
In America for example where anxiety disorder numbers are high, it’s becoming harder to feel great about life. With reference to data accumulated by the Census Bureau, there is a 8% drop in the average income of the American people since the start of 2014 downturn. Some experts believe that the financial crisis was the reason for trauma and anxiety for millions of Americans.
It is safe to say that the economic unpredictability has taken a toll on the mental health of people. In the past, it was assumed that the more you age the greater the chances are for one to acquire an anxiety disorder the reason being the build-up of health problem stresses, losses and paramount life changes. Some surveys even suggested that out of five older adults, one suffered from anxiety symptoms that needed treatment. Adding to psychological causes, the usual medical disorders in aged people can be directly accountable for the anxiety they experience and there include neurological illnesses, hormone and thyroid problems and heart disease. Seniors take several medication prescriptions which can also result in anxiety disorder due to the drug side effects.
Only recently was this theory proved wrong. Now, the younger generation is the most affected by anxiety disorders? It is estimated by the ADAA (Anxiety Disorders Association of America) that over 40 million people in the U.S. suffer from anxiety disorders based on the sales of the prescription drugs. People back then believed that once you received good education, you would acquire a good job but presently, young people are unresolved about finding a job, debts are on the increase, they have to work and study at the same time, completing later, more exhausted and for some they even start families while still studying and having to deal with all these can create a great deal of stress.
So in a way, the present times are more anxiety-ridden and stressful than the previous era. The society has also played part in contributing to the rise of anxiety cases over the past decades. The present generation has always been told that they can be whatever they want to be, they can acquire a big job title, have an enormous bank account, and for women, they can have the “perfect body”. This is a great task for a single person to shoulder and in most cases, the claims aren’t really true. The gap causes great anxiety for how hard one is required to work and major fear of failure.
The economy and society will continue to play a major role in our lives which is sad because it only means that anxiety cases will continue to increase.
